Here at Cumnor Hill House care home in Oxfordshire, we’re lucky enough to have our very own in-house cinema, and we make the most of every opportunity we can to use it. This includes regular, free-of-charge, dementia-friendly screenings, complete with complimentary refreshments.

What makes dementia-friendly cinema screenings different to the norm?

Well, first of all, our cinema room at Cumnor Hill House has a big screen, luxurious high-backed chairs and plenty of space for wheelchairs – the room has been designed to be as calming and comfortable as possible for everyone in attendance.

With the lights dimmed rather than turned off, people are free to move around a little. And with the volume slightly lower than in a normal cinema, those watching can chat about the film as it plays or sing along to musicals – interaction and engagement are encouraged rather than met with a disapproving ‘shhhhh’.

What films have you shown before?

We have shown a wide variety of well-loved classics and a few more modern films too through Sky, including Casablanca, Mary Poppins, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Bohemian Rhapsody, Aquaman and Steel Magnolias. What film would you like to see in our cinema? We’re more than happy to take requests!

We believe that our dementia-friendly cinema screenings here in Cumnor work as a form of reminiscence therapy, taking viewers back in time with familiar scenes and characters, stimulating their minds with vivid memories of days gone by.
